One of the most spectacular GA approaches in the Midwest — Burke Lakefront sits literally on the edge of Lake Erie in downtown Cleveland, with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Cleveland Browns Stadium, and the entire downtown skyline rising right next to the field. Opened in 1947 on landfill in Lake Erie, Burke was the first downtown municipally owned airport in the United States; it's named for then-Cleveland mayor Thomas A. Burke (renamed in his honor in 1960). The Cleveland National Air Show — successor in spirit to the Cleveland Air Races held at Hopkins from 1929 to 1949 — has used Burke as its venue every Labor Day weekend since 1964. The International Women's Air & Space Museum has lived in Burke's terminal since 1998. From 1981 to 2007 the airport perimeter ran the Grand Prix of Cleveland Indy-style road race. Approach over the lake with the city rising in front of you — magic.

The actual house used as the Parker family home in "A Christmas Story" (1983) — preserved in Cleveland's Tremont neighborhood as a museum, complete with the leg lamp in the front window. Renovated to match the film's interiors exactly. The Christmas Story Museum across the street has original props including Ralphie's Red Ryder BB gun, the bunny suit, and Randy's snowsuit. A pilgrimage for fans. Cleveland is only 10 minutes from KBKL — this is an easy add to a Cleveland day.
NASA Glenn sits right next to Cleveland Hopkins (KCLE); you can see it from the south side of the field. It started in 1942 as the NACA Aircraft Engine Research Lab and is still NASA's main center for propulsion and power, work that's gone into everything from the Space Shuttle to the Mars rovers to the Artemis Moon program. The research site itself isn't open to the public, but the Glenn story is told at the Great Lakes Science Center downtown.
The only national park between the Mississippi and the Atlantic in this region. The Cuyahoga River winds through 33,000 acres of forested valley between Cleveland and Akron — once so polluted it caught fire in 1969 (an event that helped launch the modern environmental movement), now restored to a thriving river. The Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad runs through the park. Brandywine Falls (65 feet) is the visual highlight. Beautiful from above, especially in fall.
