Kissimmee Gateway

Kissimmee, FL

FIELD HISTORY

Kissimmee Gateway is Central Florida's GA hub, just minutes from the theme parks but worlds away in character. Established during WWII as a training base, that heritage lives on through Warbird Adventures and the Kissimmee Air Museum, which maintain flyable WWII aircraft including T-6 Texans, a TBM Avenger, and a P-51 Mustang. Stallion 51 also offers P-51 flight experiences here.

FROM THE AIR

Bok Tower Gardens

Edward Bok's 1929 carillon tower — 205 feet of Georgia marble and pink Etowah stone, with a 60-bell carillon that performs daily concerts. Set in 250 acres of gardens designed by Frederick Law Olmsted Jr. on Iron Mountain, central Florida's highest point at 295 feet. National Historic Landmark. Quiet sanctuary 25 miles from the Disney chaos. Lake Wales sits in citrus country.

Sun n Fun Aerospace Expo Grounds

Lakeland Linder hosts Sun 'n Fun every April — the second-largest fly-in aviation event in the United States, after EAA Oshkosh. 200,000+ visitors, 4,000+ aircraft, the Florida warbird flyovers, daily airshow with the Blue Angels or Thunderbirds. Permanent buildings include the Florida Air Museum (year-round), Aerospace Center for Excellence, and the historic Piedmont Airlines DC-3. KLAL is the airport; the grounds are on the field.

Valiant Air Command Warbird Museum — On the Space Coast

A warbird museum on Florida's Space Coast, founded in 1977 and built around aircraft that still fly. The 30,000-square-foot hangar at Space Coast Regional holds vintage military aircraft and an active restoration shop, plus a Memorabilia Hall of flight gear, uniforms, and weapons. What makes the location special is what's next door: this is Titusville, directly across the Indian River from Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral — you can stand at the warbird museum and look east at the launch pads where the Saturn Vs and shuttles left Earth. Two eras of American flight, a few miles apart.

Cape Canaveral Launch Complex

Where America went to space. Launch Complex 39A sent every Apollo mission to the moon and now launches SpaceX Falcon 9 rockets regularly. The Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) is one of the largest buildings in the world — visible from 50+ miles. The Kennedy Space Center sits within a wildlife refuge, and the contrast between rocket launch pads and undeveloped wetlands is striking from above. Check NOTAMs carefully — the area has frequent TFRs during launches.
