Greenfield Village, the Henry Ford, and a museum of flying warbirds
KDTW is the closest commercial field to The Henry Ford in Dearborn: the museum holds the actual Rosa Parks bus, the chair Lincoln was sitting in at Ford's Theatre, and Buckminster Fuller's Dymaxion House; Greenfield Village next door holds the Wright brothers' actual Dayton cycle shop, moved here in 1937, and a rebuilt Menlo Park laboratory complex. Six miles from the museum sits Willow Run (KYIP), where Ford's mile-long plant built B-24 Liberators at the rate the war demanded; the Yankee Air Museum keeps that story on the field. West to KAZO Kalamazoo for the Air Zoo, whose specialty is rarer than flying warbirds: they raise them from the bottom of Lake Michigan, where hundreds of Navy planes ditched during secret WWII carrier-qualification training, and restore them on a floor you can walk. The last SBD-1 Dauntless on the planet rolled out in July 2026, seventy thousand volunteer hours after its 1994 recovery; a PBY Catalina is on the bench next.
