Glacier and the Big Sky

Northwest Montana from Missoula to the Canadian border

Missoula in the Bitterroot Valley is the launch point — site of the US Forest Service smokejumper base and one of the great Western university towns. North to Kalispell at the head of Flathead Lake, the largest natural freshwater lake west of the Mississippi. Then Going-to-the-Sun country: the high-traffic eastern approach into Glacier National Park, where 150 glaciers have shrunk to 25 in 175 years and Logan Pass crosses the Continental Divide at 6,646 feet.
