The National Road, the brickyard, and a horse track
US 40 through Indianapolis is the old National Road, America's first federally funded highway, open through the city by the mid-1830s; this loop crosses it between Eagle Creek and Shelbyville. Start at KUMP. West to KEYE puts you four miles from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, home of the Indy 500 since 1911 and still finished over the Yard of Bricks; during WWI the same property ran an aviation repair depot working Liberty engines. Southeast to KGEZ, where Horseshoe Indianapolis (the former Indiana Grand, one of the state's two racinos) sits next door to the field.
