Pellston to the only commercial airfield on an island where cars are illegal
KPLN Pellston is the closest mainland airport to the Mackinac Bridge — five miles long, the longest suspension bridge in the Western Hemisphere when completed in 1957. From the air the bridge is the centerline between Lake Michigan and Lake Huron at the Straits of Mackinac. Twelve miles east to KMCD Mackinac Island, where motor vehicles have been banned since 1898 — transportation is horse, bicycle, or foot. The 3,501-foot runway is the only commercial airfield on the island; Fort Mackinac (built by the British in 1780) and the Grand Hotel (which has the world's longest porch at 660 feet) are walking distance from the field.
