Fargo to Bismarck to the badlands. Knife River Indian Villages is where the expedition wintered in 1804-05 and met Sakakawea. Lake Sakakawea (third-largest reservoir in the US) drowns the original Mandan villages. Theodore Roosevelt National Park preserves the badlands where the 25-year-old future president decided the country needed protected wild places.
