Northern Indiana Lakes and Notre Dame

Northern Indiana is glacial country; the Wisconsinan ice sheet left hundreds of natural lakes behind when it retreated some 14,000 years ago, and this journey stays inside the lake belt the whole way. KASW Warsaw is closest to Lake Wawasee, Indiana's largest natural lake. KEKM Elkhart is twenty minutes from the University of Notre Dame, where the Word of Life mural on Hesburgh Library, Touchdown Jesus, rises beyond the north end zone with arms spread like a referee signaling the score. KANQ Angola sits at the doorstep of Pokagon State Park, where CCC Company 556 built a wooden toboggan run in 1935 for their own fun; it opened to the public in 1938 and still runs all winter, refrigerated since 1971. Before that, crews cut ice blocks from Lake James and shaved them to fit the track. A quarter mile, 90 feet of drop, 42 miles an hour, and the only refrigerated run in Indiana. A weekend chain across the northern tier without leaving the lakes.
