Sierra Crossing

Bishop east of the Sierra to Columbia in Gold Country

A high-altitude crossing of the Sierra Nevada with the Bishop bowl behind and the Mother Lode ahead. Bishop sits at 4,121 feet on the dry east side, Columbia at 2,118 feet in the Gold Country foothills. The crest you cross runs over 13,000 feet for 50 miles in either direction. Density-altitude planning required; the views are why you flew west.
