Nuclear history, the deepest river canyon, and the western Niagara
Idaho Falls is the closest civilian airport to Idaho National Laboratory — where the first electricity from nuclear power was generated by EBR-I in 1951 — and to the western entrance of Yellowstone, 100 miles north. Twin Falls sits at the rim of the Snake River Canyon, where Evel Knievel attempted his rocket jump in 1974 and where Shoshone Falls drops 212 feet over a basalt rim wider than Niagara. Both fields are on the Snake River Plain, the volcanic apron that defines southern Idaho.
