Bedford quarries, the West Baden dome, and the boy who grew into a president
Southern Indiana on one weekend. KBMG Bloomington opens it: Brown County State Park, Indiana's largest, is just east and famous for its fall hardwoods, and Cataract Falls, the state's largest waterfall by volume, tumbles over Mill Creek to the northwest. KBFR Bedford sits in the heart of limestone country; the Empire State Building, the Pentagon, the National Cathedral, and the interior walls of the Lincoln Memorial were all cut from the quarries around the field. KFRH French Lick anchors West Baden Springs Hotel, whose 200-foot atrium dome was the largest free-spanning dome in the world from its 1902 opening until 1913; doubters said it would fall the day the supports came out, and it is still standing over breakfast service. KHNB Huntingburg is the airport for Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial; Lincoln lived in southern Indiana from age 7 to 21, and the state he grew up in later faced the inside of his memorial.
