In 1942 the US Navy built an outlying field eight miles south of Daytona for primary flight training. The runway was 4,000 feet. After the war the Navy gave it back. In 1969 developer John Williams looked at that runway and the surrounding pine forest and saw something nobody else had: the world's first planned residential airpark. Today Spruce Creek (7FL6) has 1,400 homes, 5,000 residents, three guard gates, a country club, and taxiways that lead from front yards to a private 4,000ft runway. John Travolta lived here for years and used to taxi his Boeing 707 from his front lawn, neighbors waving. The lifestyle is not a fantasy — it's an HOA covenant. KDAB is eight miles north; pilots who can't get the gate code can still grab dinner at The Tail Wind in the public corner of the development.
